APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Cardiovascular Disease Risk Management is an interactive certificate training program that explores the pharmacist’s role in cardiovascular disease risk management. This practice-based activity is the first step for pharmacists interested in learning the essential skills to successfully assess risk, promote cardiovascular disease prevention, and encourage patient adherence to therapy.

 

The goals of this program are to:

  • Educate pharmacists on current evidence-based treatment goals and clinical management recommendations for dyslipidemia and hypertension.
  • Familiarize pharmacists with important concepts related to healthful lifestyle changes that focus on cardiovascular disease prevention.
  • Introduce techniques and skills for encouraging patient adherence to prescribed therapies.
  • Ensure pharmacist proficiency in blood pressure measurement technique and point-of-care lipid testing.
  • Enhance pharmacist experience in applying elements of motivational interviewing with respect to medication adherence and lifestyle modifications.

 

APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Cardiovascular Disease Risk Management certificate training program has two components: web-based interactive self-study with assessment and the virtual live seminar with online final assessment. A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who successfully complete all program components, including an evaluation.

 

Virtual Training: 

The APhA Certificate Training Program hosted by the Illinois Pharmacists Association will be offered in a virtual format. Zoom Video Conferencing will be used to deliver the live session and a video-based assessment will be used to complete the skills check-off requirement.

By registering for this program, you agree to participate in the live portion of the course by using active video and audio feed through your computer or mobile device. Additionally, you agree to complete the skills assessment through a virtual check-off process. Credit for completion of the certificate program will only be granted to participants who complete the self-study requirements, are verified as physically present throughout the duration of the live session, complete the virtual skills process with a passing assessment, and receive a passing score on the written post-test.

The Live Seminar portion will be conducted online.  To participate, the registrants must:

 

  • Join Zoom webinar by computer, tablet, or any mobile device.
  • Must have a working camera and have video enabled throughout the entire program.
  • Must be present for the entirety of the program to be eligible for completion of the certificate training.
  • There is a Zoom app that can be downloaded on mobile devices through the App Store or Google Play. Search for Zoom Cloud Meetings app.
  • If planning to use a MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, etc., please navigate to https://zoom.us/ (using the Mac computer that will be used for the Zoom session), click on the Download link at the right side of the screen, download and install/run the installer program (named Zoom.pkg).
  • Join the meeting 15-30 minutes early to test that your microphone and camera is working properly and to check-in.

Key Learning Objectives of the Live Training Seminar

  • Assess a patient’s risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
  • Describe how to use patient factors that are not included in risk calculators to guide treatment selections.
  • Explain how to apply national treatment guidelines for hypertension and dyslipidemia to individual patients.
  • Discuss how to identify patients who are appropriate for the use of aspirin for primary prevention.
  • Describe how treatment approaches for dyslipidemia and hypertension should be modified for special populations, including those with diabetes, renal insufficiency, and elevated hepatic transaminase levels.
  • Recommend appropriate lifestyle interventions that reduce cardiovascular risk.
  • Apply patient education and counseling strategies, including motivational interviewing, to support lifestyle modifications.
  • Demonstrate how to measure blood pressure.
  • Discuss the use of point-of-care lipid testing in cardiovascular risk management.
  • Discuss how to implement cardiovascular risk management services in various practice settings, including potential billing options and quality measures.

Course material and exams will be accessed online - In order to participate in this activity, registrants must have access to a computer with minimum system requirements:  Internet connectivity with current version of internet browsers, such as Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer; Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash Player 8 or higher, Operating Systems: Windows 10, XP, 7 0r 8, Vista; Mac OSX, Android & iOS devices; Hardware: 128MB MB of free memory (not 128 MB total), and Audio: Sound card and speakers or earphones. Fee and Refund Policy   

This program is limited to the first 40 registered participants.

Illinois Residents:    Pharmacist - $59       Student - $59         
Non-IL Residents:    Pharmacist - $550           

 

Refund Policy

Refund (minus a $30 processing fee) if cancelled by April 1, 2020.  However, participants who redeem an enrollment code at any time will be charged a fee of $175 regardless whether or not they complete any portion of the self-study.  No refunds after April 1, 2020.  Please be advised that this program is subject to postponement or cancellation if the required minimum number of registrants is not met.  Contact Kimberly Condon at 217.522.7300 or [email protected] with questions, including dietary restrictions.
